What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy is a health care profession designed to help individuals develop or maintain the physical, cognitive or social skills necessary to meet the demands of daily life. Occupational therapy helps people to overcome problems they have completing self-care, work and leisure activities, so they can lead more productive, satisfying, and independent lives. Occupational Therapists’ unique training includes knowledge about medical, physical, cognitive, and psychosocial limitations, and how a specific environment affects these limitations.

Occupational Therapy treatment might include:
Specific activities or exercises designed to improve a person’s function and abilities
Education or training regarding the day to day management of any activity that occupies time and energy
Recommendations for modifications to the environment, and/or the use of assistive devices or equipment to accommodate for specific limitations and enhance function

Occupational Therapists are University trained professionals. The education requirements vary slightly from province to province. In Manitoba, the current entry-level designation is a Master of Occupational Therapy degree (MOT).
